NCUSLR-Led Medical Mission Makes Impact in Derna, Libya

We're pleased to share an update on the recent mission to Libya led by the National Council on US Libya Relations (NCUSLR) with Larry Soule, Director of Rehab Services at Adventist Health in Portland, Oregon. The American medical team collaborated with the Emergency Medicine and Support Center (EMSC) in Libya to address the aftermath of the eastern region flood disaster in Derna from October 15 to October 31, 2023. This mission highlights our commitment to enhancing medical services and knowledge exchange between the US and Libya.

The NCUSLR played a key role in facilitating the team's entry into Libya by assisting with visas, immigration procedures, accommodation, and providing specialized translators. These efforts were essential in creating a conducive environment for the team's success.

In Derna, the visiting team worked closely with Al-Wahda Hospital, Bab Tobruk, collaborating with Dr. Assad and Libyan physical therapist Shaher. Their adaptability to new treatment techniques demonstrated the effectiveness of international collaboration. The team conducted 329 medical examinations in internal medicine and 63 physical therapy sessions, contributing to the internal treatment localization program.

Beyond medical contributions, the mission served as an opportunity for cultural exchange. Despite the challenges faced by the people of Derna, the community was friendly and welcoming to the visitors. The NCUSLR extends sincere gratitude to the team of medical professionals and physical therapists and the EMSC for providing this unique opportunity to serve the people of Derna through its rehabilitation.

Reflecting on the mission's success, the NCUSLR remains committed to supporting future opportunities for the recovery of the people of Derna and the nation at large.
